Dr. Siebert Irving Strayer founds Strayer Business College in Baltimore, MD.

Women welcomed into Strayer classrooms.

Dr. Strayer opens a branch of the college in Washington, D.C.
1970
The institution is licensed to offer four-year bachelor of science degrees and renamed Strayer College.
1981
Strayer College accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and approved to open campuses in Virginia.
1987
Strayer College authorized to award master of science degrees by the District of Columbia Education Licensure Commission.
1996
The college launches its first online learning program.
Strayer Education, Inc. established to raise capital for expansion.
1998
Strayer College becomes Strayer University.
2000
The MSCHE reaffirms Strayer’s accreditation.
Strayer operates 13 campuses in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland.

Strayer’s Master of Education program granted accreditation by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council for a seven-year period.
Strayer’s business degree programs granted accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) for a 10-year period.

The JWMI Executive MBA earns ACBSP accreditation.
Strayer offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, which is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education in 2017.

Strayer University launches Strayer Studios to reimagine course content and keep students engaged in learning.

The MSCHE reaffirms Strayer University’s accreditation.
2019
Strayer University opens five new campuses.

Meet Strayer leaders

Antoinette Farmer-Thompson, DHEd
President, Strayer University
Dr. Antoinette Farmer-Thompson was appointed as the 18th President of Strayer University in April
2024, following her role as the Provost and Chief Academic Officer, which she begin in November of
2021. A distinguished leader in higher education, with over 16 years of experience, her previous
roles include Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operations Officer of Educational Outreach and
Student Services at Arizona State University, and Senior Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness
and founding Honors College Dean at Grand Canyon University.
Dr. Farmer-Thompson holds a Doctor of Health Education in Health Sciences from A.T. Still
University, a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare from Grand Canyon University, a
Master of Arts in Education from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal
Justice from Arizona State University. She also holds an Artificial Intelligence in Business Strategies
and Applications Certificate from the University of California Berkely, and an Executive Women in
Leadership Certificate from Cornell University.
Dr. Farmer-Thompson’s research interests focus on innovation in education to enhance economic
mobility, organizational transformation through analytics and institutional effectiveness, and the
development of women in leadership.

Lisa Raisor
Chief of Staff
Lisa Raisor serves as the Chief of Staff to the Strayer University President. In her more than 20 years of experience in higher education, Lisa has held positions in academic affairs, faculty leadership, instructional design, teaching/training, and student services and is well versed in portfolio optimization, driving innovation, curriculum development, instructional technology, program assessment, strategic planning, and effective team building.

Jacqueline Palmer, EdD
Chief Diversity Officer and Special Assistant to the President, Student and Alumni Relations
As Strayer University’s chief diversity officer, Dr. Jacqueline Palmer is dedicated to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all. She believes that the best policies start at the personal level, rather than from top-down directives that take time to implement. That’s why she focuses on fundamental principles such as collaborative decision-making, ensuring that every voice is heard, actively listening to students and staff, and responding to their feedback. By establishing specific, measurable goals, Dr. Palmer cultivates a climate of openness, engagement and a true sense of belonging. Her commitment to continuous learning and improvement is crucial to building a strong, effective DEI culture.

Ryan Poirier, EdD
Vice Provost, Academic Affairs and Accreditation Liaison Officer
Dr. Ryan Poirier serves as the Vice Provost of Academic Affairs as well as Strayer’s Accreditation Liaison Officer with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). In these roles, Dr. Poirier is responsible for leading the Academic and Curriculum Committee, the University Disciplinary Committee, student affairs, institutional effectiveness, accreditation, the Registrar’s Office, and specialized advising for at-risk students, fostering continuous improvement and ensuring the highest standards of academic integrity throughout Strayer University. Dr. Poirier has a rich history in leadership and accreditation, having served as a Campus Dean, Dean of the School of Education, Director of Institutional Research, Faculty as well as having worked with nursing and business specialized accreditations. Dr. Poirier holds a Master of Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration degree and a Doctorate in Educational Psychology degree, both from The Ohio State University.

Bob Morrill
Vice President, Academic Operations and Faculty Excellence
Bob Morrill serves as the Vice President of Academic Operations and Faculty Excellence. In this role he is focused on re-envisioning the future of teaching and learning across higher education while ensuring ongoing innovation and academic quality and he is responsible for the Faculty Center of Excellence, the Innovation Lab, Strayer Studios, Course Development and Academic and Curriculum Operations. Prior to this role, Bob served as Director, Student Finance Operations, Sr. Director, Employability, and University Registrar. Bob holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from State University of New York at Oswego and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Jack Welch Management Institute.

Mary Carr, JD
Senior Vice Provost, Strayer Business Programs and Dean of the Jack Welch Management Institute
As senior vice provost of Strayer University and dean of the Jack Welch Management Institute, Mary Carr is driven by a single, laser-focused mission: to transform professionals into leaders and help them win in business. Under her leadership, the curriculum design and development team is committed to creating an innovative, world-class student learning experience across all undergraduate and graduate programs. Carr worked directly with Jack Welch on the content and delivery of the top 10 ranked MBA program. She is passionate about continuing to teach Jack’s canons and principles to future generations of business leaders. Previously, she was a practicing attorney in Boston.

Joseph Veres, EdD
Vice President and Executive Dean, College of Innovation in IT and Professional Studies
Dr. Joseph Veres directs Strayer’s IT, criminal justice, nonclinical healthcare, educational leadership, public administration and bootcamp programs, helping students gain leading-edge skills for tomorrow’s workforce. Dr. Veres spearheads initiatives that help align academic programs with industry needs, ensuring that students are not just prepared to pursue their first job – they’re also ready for a lifetime of career growth and adaptability. He is also focused on building partnerships with employers to create career mobility through education. Dr. Veres has a proven track record of developing and leading departments and programs that drive student success.

Kathleen Thompson
Executive Dean, Honors College
Kathleen Thompson is the executive dean of Strayer’s Honors College, where she also leads the Student and Alumni Experience team and serves as a Distinguished Professor of Business. Thompson’s passion for innovation and collaboration shines brightly as she partners with teams to create unique, impactful experiences for students and alumni. With her CEO mindset and business experience, Thompson is focused on integrating career readiness and economic mobility into every interaction. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Kennesaw State University, an MBA from the Jack Welch Management Institute and is currently pursuing a DBA in Strategy and Innovation at Capella University.

Kristie Lowry, DNP
Dean of Nursing
Dr. Kristie Lowry serves as the Dean of Nursing. In this role, she is responsible for the strategic direction, academic excellence, and operational efficiency of the nursing program. Prior to her current role, Dr. Lowry served as the Program Director for the Doctor of Nursing Program at Capella University. Dr. Lowry is also a licensed registered nurse and has spent over 34 years in nursing and nursing education. Dr. Lowry holds a Bachelor of Nursing degree from Henderson State University and both a Master’s and Doctor of Nursing degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Antoinette Farmer-Thompson, DHEd
Strayer University’s first Black woman president leads the way in expanding students’ horizons and enhancing their employability. Dr. Antoinette Farmer-Thompson is an innovative, passionate champion of students, committed to driving economic mobility by integrating work and learning. Dr. Farmer-Thompson is on a mission to deliver a practical, powerful curriculum that includes employability skills, leadership, microcredentials and technology to help students succeed in the workplace. One of her superpowers is supporting and fostering leadership skills, executive presence and professional advancements for women. Dr. Farmer-Thompson believes that education is the great equalizer, and that by working together with employers and communities, we can create new opportunities for all.
Charlotte F. Beason, EdD, Chair
Dr. Charlotte Beason is the chairperson of the board of trustees. She has served as a member of the board of trustees since 1996. She has extensive experience in education, distance learning and the accreditation of education programs. She was executive director of the Kentucky Board of Nursing from 2005 to 2012. From 2000 to 2003, Dr. Beason was chair and vice chair of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education – an autonomous agency accrediting baccalaureate and graduate programs in nursing. She is an evaluator for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. From 1988 to 2004, Dr. Beason was with the Department of Veterans Affairs, first as director of Health Professions Education Service and the Health Professional Scholarship Program, and then as program director, Office of Nursing Services. Dr. Beason has served on the board since 1996 and is a member of the Nominating Committee. Dr. Beason holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Berea College, a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing from Boston University and a doctorate in clinical psychology and public practice from Harvard University.
Jonathan Gueverra, EdD
Dr. Jonathan Gueverra was elected to the board of trustees in 2012. He now serves as the president and chief executive officer of Florida Keys Community College. Prior to this appointment, he was the founding chief executive officer of the Community College of the District of Columbia, the first community college in Washington, D.C. With more than 25 years of higher education experience, Dr. Gueverra has served in a variety of administrative and faculty positions in two-year and four-year colleges and universities along the nation’s east coast. In 2015, he was elected to the board of trustees for the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Colleges. Prior to this, he served as a member of the board of the American Association for Community Colleges and co-chaired the Commission on Workforce Development. In addition, Dr. Gueverra serves on the steering committee and the communications committee for the Council of Presidents for the Florida College System. Dr. Gueverra holds an associate degree from Newbury College, a bachelor’s degree from Providence College, a master’s degree in business administration and a doctorate in education both from the University of Massachusetts.
Leslie Hitch, EdD
Dr. Leslie Hitch was elected to the board of trustees in 2018. Dr. Hitch is currently teaching faculty at William James College and has been associate teaching professor, Northeastern University and visiting fellow at Swinburne Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. She has designed curricula and taught in master’s and doctoral programs in Leadership, Global Studies and Higher Education Administration, as well as for FBI. In addition to her faculty position in Australia, Dr. Hitch has extensive teaching experience internationally in Hong Kong and Vietnam. Her higher education administrative experience includes director of academic technology services at Northeastern University; vice president, Harcourt, Inc.; program director at Simmons College; and director of executive education at Babson College. She, and her co-author Shreshthi Mehta, received second prize in the Ivey-Publishing/Indian Business School Global Case Writing competition in 2015 and honorable mention in 2017. She is a member of the board for the Center for Independent Documentary and a trustee of the Newton Cultural Alliance. She holds a BA and MBA from Simmons College, certificate in management and leadership in education from Harvard School of Education and an EdD in higher education administration from the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
William C. Reha, MD
Dr. William Reha has served as a member of the board of trustees since 2007 and is chair of its Alumni and Student Affairs Committee. He is a board-certified urologic surgeon in Woodbridge, Virginia. Dr. Reha is active in Strayer University alumni affairs and is the 2005 Outstanding Alumni Award winner. Dr. Reha has served as president of the Prince William County Medical Society, the Potomac Hospital Medical Staff and the Virginia Urological Society. He was also speaker and is a former president of the Medical Society of Virginia. He serves as chair of the Virginia Delegation to the American Medical Association and is president-elect for the American Association of Clinical Urologists. Dr. Reha is a fellow of the Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute and holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Binghamton University, an MD from New York Medical College and a master’s in business administration from Strayer University. He completed his residency in surgery/urology at Georgetown University.
Peter D. Salins, PhD
Dr. Peter Salins has served as a member of the board of trustees since 2002 and is chair of its Curriculum and Assessment Committee. Having served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs of the State University of New York (SUNY) system from 1997 to 2006, he is currently university professor of political science at SUNY, Stony Brook University and director of its graduate program in public policy. Dr. Salins is a fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a director of the Citizens Housing and Planning Council of New York. Dr. Salins holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture, a master’s degree in regional planning and a doctorate in metropolitan studies and regional planning, all from Syracuse University.
Joe Schaefer, MBA
Joe Schaefer has served as a member of the board of trustees since 2018. He is currently the chief technology officer of Strategic Education, Inc. Prior to that, for more than 10 years, he held multiple senior leadership positions at Strayer University, including chief technology and innovation officer, senior vice president of academic operations and chief information officer. Prior to joining Strayer University, Schaefer held various technology leadership positions at Accenture, one of the world’s leading consulting companies. Schaefer holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.
Carol Shapiro, MD
Dr. Carol Shapiro has served as a member of the board of trustees since 2015. Dr. Shapiro, a plastic surgeon, is the medical director of the Wound Healing Center of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. She has served as president of the medical staff of the two hospitals in the county where she practices. She has also served as president of the Prince William County Medical Society and was the first woman to be elected president of the Medical Society of Virginia. She chaired the Virginia Delegation of the American Medical Association. Dr. Shapiro served as president of the National Capital Society of Plastic Surgeons and was appointed to serve on the Ethics and Judicial Committees of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Additionally, she has served on the board of trustees of the Prince William Hospital and Potomac Hospital. Currently, she is the vice chair of the Potomac Health Foundation and chair of the Grants Committee, and serves on the board of trustees of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. She recently completed a 12-year term on the board of visitors of Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Shapiro did her undergraduate work at the University of Pittsburgh and earned her MD at the Woman’s Medical College in Philadelphia. After completing a residency in general surgery and plastic surgery at Georgetown University, she started a solo practice in Woodbridge, Virginia. For several years, Dr. Shapiro was a clinical instructor at Georgetown University Department of Plastic Surgery. In 1996, she earned an MBA from George Mason University.
J. Chris Toe, PhD
Dr. J. Chris Toe has served as a member of the board of trustees since 2003. He served as president of Strayer University from 2003 to 2006 and as minister of agriculture of the Republic of Liberia from 2006 to 2009. Dr. Toe now serves as executive chairperson of Agrifore Advisory & Investment Services (AAIS), Incorporated in Liberia and senior advisory for Country Strategic Planning for the World Food Programme in Rome, Italy. Dr. Toe holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Liberia, a master’s degree in agricultural economics and a doctorate in economics, both from Texas Tech University.
Andrew E. Watt
Andrew Watt is president of U.S. Higher Education at Strategic Education, Inc. Watt previously served as senior vice president of postsecondary education to Strategic Education, Inc. and Capella Education Company. Before that, Watt served as vice president of colleges and university operations and Capella University’s chief operations officer, from 2014 to 2019. He has held a variety of leadership positions across Capella University, including roles in operations, finance, analytics and its markets and products team. Before joining Capella, he worked in transaction advisory services at both Deloitte & Touche LLP and Arthur Andersen LLP. Watt graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting.
Michael E. Wooten, EdD
Dr. Michael Wooten is a small business owner and a Marine Corps veteran of Afghanistan. He is a former board chair for Northern Virginia Community College and was recently appointed to the board of the Virginia Community College System by Governor Glenn Youngkin. After his 20-year Marine Corps career, his assignments included professor of contract management at Defense Acquisition University, deputy chief procurement officer for the District of Columbia, acting assistant secretary at U.S. Department of Education and administrator for federal procurement policy at the Office of Management and Budget. In this role, he was the U.S. procurement policy chief. Dr. Wooten holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and master’s degrees from The George Washington University, the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and Norwich University. He received his bachelor’s degree from Chapman University.

Through our Fellows for Justice program, we are offering up to 50 full-tuition scholarships per year and additional opportunities to support students in making a positive impact in their communities. Our Civic and Community Alliance Scholarship offers a 25% tuition discount for eligible students working in certain civic roles.
