Eligibility requirements

What counts as a qualifying employer?

Qualifying employers include any state, local or tribal government agency and many nonprofit organizations. A government contractor is not considered a government employer.

Which nonprofit organizations qualify?

  • Eligible nonprofit organizations include an organization that is tax-exempt under section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Current state, local or tribal government agency employees including many nonprofit organizations are eligible for this scholarship once they are admitted to Strayer University. To be eligible, students must show that they are considered to be an employee of a qualifying employer.

What determines an employee of a qualifying employer?

If a qualifying employer has sent or will send you a Form W-2 (Wage and Tax Statement) at the end of each tax year, you are employed by the qualifying employer.

For example, if you were hired by a government contractor and the contractor issues your Form W-2, you are employed by the contractor. In this case, although you may be doing work for a qualifying employer (a government agency), you are not an employee of the qualifying employer.

Another example of an employee of qualifying employer: if you’re a full-time employee of a law enforcement agency, your employment qualifies regardless of your position (police officer, forensic technologist, computer forensics, support staff, etc.).

Please note the following:

  1. Only new and readmit Strayer students are eligible.
  2. Spouses and dependents are not eligible for the tuition assistance.
  3. Students must show proof of employment documentation only once. If they change jobs, they are still eligible for tuition assistance; however, it could be lost if the student does not take courses for two consecutive quarters.
  4. Students who utilize the Civic and Community Alliance Scholarship are eligible for the Graduation Fund.
  5. This offer may be combined with the laptop offer.
  6. You must remain employed with a qualifying employer at the time you submit your application.

Documentation requirements

Verification of current employment employed by a qualified employer must be dated within one month prior to the date of registration. All documentation must be verified by SU. Documentation can be in the form of one of the following:

  1. An email directly from a supervisor’s work email address that indicates the student’s role. Email domain must include organization name – e.g. @texas.gov or @houstonpolice.org;
  2. A letter on employer letterhead, signed by a supervisor (PDF version of the letter is acceptable) that indicates the student’s role;
  3. A current pay stub from the employer that indicates the student’s role; or
  4. Employer tuition assistance documentation that indicates the student’s role.
